Abstract

Electrical insulating oil is manufactured by preparing a refined oil A by solvent extraction of a mineral distillate oil with a selective solvent for aromatics, treating the raffinate with concentrated sulphuric acid or oleum, removing acid sludge, neutralizing the raffinate with an alkaline material and treating with a solid adsorbent; preparing an extract-blended oil B by mixing oil A with an aromatic extract obtained by solvent extracting a mineral distillate oil with a selective solvent for aromatics, treating the mixture with concentrated sulphuric acid or oleum and moving acid sludge, neutralizing with an alkaline material and treating with a solid adsorbent; and blending oil B with oil A to produce an oil containing 9-18 per cent by weight of aromatic constituents. The aromatic extract may also be treated with concentrated sulphuric acid or oleum and acid sludge separated, neutralized with an alkaline material and treated with a solid adsorbent before mixing with oil A. Naphthenic distillate oils or blended oils may be treated; petroleum lubricating distillates are specified. The raffinate and aromatic extract may be obtained from the same or different oils. Selective solvents referred to are liquid sulphur dioxide with or without benzene, nitrobenzene, phenol and furfural or mixtures thereof. The alkaline material may be an aqueous or alcoholic solution of caustic soda. Solid adsorbents specified are adsorbent earths and clays, which may be activated; fuller's earth, bauxite and acid-treated clays are referred to. The adsorbents may contain small quantities of alkaline material such as lime. The percentage of aromatic constituents in the oils may be determined from adsorption analyses or refractive index measurements. Optional ingredients which may be added to the oil are oil-soluble phenols, e.g. alkyl phenols and naphthols and their sulphur, selenium and tellurium analogues.
