Abstract

752,506. Motor vehicle frames. BUDD CO. May 28, 1954 [May 29, 1953], No. 15895/54. Class 79 (4). A chassis frame comprises a mono-piece sheet metal stamping 20 and a separately-made main longitudinal member 21, the stamping including an end portion of a transverse beam 28 for the attachment of wheel guiding means and supporting springs and a short longitudinal member 26, the main and short longitudinal members 21, 26 being aligned and directly connected together. As shown in Figs. 1 and 3 a pair of longitudinal members 21, each comprising nesting channel members 24, 25, and connected together by transverse members 22, 23 form the rear part of the frame. The front part comprises the mono-piece sheetmetal stamping 20 and a bottom plate welded to flanges 32 on the stamping, the plate having apertures receiving suspension springs abutting the stamping 20 at 39. The front part is formed with a pair of short longitudinal members 26, the rear ends 30 of which mate with the longitudinal members 21 and the front ends 29 of which support a bumper. The longitudinals 26 are interconnected by the transverse members 28 and a further member 27, the members 27, 28 being apertured at 35, 36 for front and rear supports for the vehicle power unit. Steering gear and the wheel suspension means are carried at 37, 38, respectively. In a modification, Figs. 11 and 12 (not shown), the rear transverse member 28 is-replaced by stub arms from the short longitudinal members, and the bottom plate is mostly formed from the cut-out portions of the upper stamping. In other modifications the upper stamping is formed by two stampings each comprising one short lorigitudinal member and one or more transverse members or the stamping comprises the entire transverse member with short lengths of the adjoining longitudinal members. Alternatively the mono-piece stamping and flat bottom plate are replaced by two stampings having oppositely facing channel or angle sections.
