Abstract

751,483. Thermal switches. THOMPSON & CO. (SUNBURY), Ltd., R. E. Dec. 1, 1954 [Sept. 1, 1953], No. 24128/53. Class 38(5) A snap action device comprises a leaf spring divided by slots into tension and compression strips which are interconnected at each end, the spring being supported at one end and between the ends of the tension strips, the operating force being applied to the free end. As applied to a thermal switch associated with an immersion heater, the spring 4 has two tension strips 6, 7 and a central compression strip 5, the strips 6, 7 being deformed at 8 to bow the strip 5. The spring is attached to a support 9 by a rivet 10 and plate 11, to which the parts 8 are clamped. The strip 5 is deformed at 30 to bias the spring to the Fig. 1 position where a contact 16 on strip 5 engages a fixed contact 17. The spring is moved over-centre by a bimetal strip 3 acting on the free end 19 of the spring. A stop 18 is adjustable to vary the differential, and the operating temperature is adjusted by a screw 22 acting on the support 9 which is biased counter-clockwise about a pivot 21 by terminal connections 27, 28.
