Abstract

Lead, and any antimony or zinc present, are recovered from a sulphide mineral containing them and barium sulphate by treating the mineral with a quantity of iron equal to the amount stoichiometrically necessary to react with the lead sulphide, and any antimony or zinc sulphide present, plus (a) more than 20 per cent of the quantity necessary to react with the lead sulphide, or (b) at least the quantity stoichiometrically necessary to reduce the whole of the barium sulphate to sulphide, whichever is the greater. Preferably the excess iron is the sum of the two minimum quantities referred to above. The iron may be mixed e.g. as turnings, with the mineral before heating, or may be introduced into heated mineral in the molten state. The composition of the slag in the process may be adjusted as described in Specification 733,287.
