Abstract
219,719. Marks, E. C. R., (American Smelting & Refining Co.). Feb. 28, 1923. Dry processes of extracting tin.-In the treatment of tin ores or concentrates containing non- ferrous metals such as antimony, lead, bismuth, and copper, with or without iron, the ores &c. are so smelted as to form a slag containing a substantial part of the tin, and this slag is removed and treated to extract the tin. The ores &c.,- which may have been subjected to a preliminary roasting or sintering, with or without the addition of a silicious flux, to remove excess of sulphur, are delivered to a blast furnace or reverberatory furnace with a reducing agent such as coal or coke in quantity sufficient to reduce to the metallic state the metals other than tin and iron and to reduce stannic and ferric oxides to stannous and ferrous oxides respectively which form a fusible slag with the silica present. This slag is removed, mixed with a lime flux and with carbonaceous material, and smelted in a blast furnace or in a reverberatory furnace to produce metallic tin, the iron remaining in the slag.
