750,223. Sterilizers. HURSTHOUSE, W. Jan. 13, 1954 [Oct. 17, 1952], No. 26040/52. Class 81(1). [Also in Groups XI, XIII and XXIX] An apparatus for heating liquids comprises a container for the liquid, a main source of heat controlled by a member having a spindle moved by a manually operated lever and held in its operative or heat on position against the action of a spring by a catch which engages with an abutment associated with the spindle to bring the liquid to a predetermined temperature and a thermostatic element adapted to operate and release the catch when the predetermined temperature is reached and reduce the heat supplied to the liquid to an amount sufficient to maintain it at the predetermined temperature. As shewn water in the receptacle A is heated by a steam coil the supply to which is controlled by a valve B (see Group XXIX) which when opened passes sufficient steam to bring the water to the boil fairly quickly when the valve is closed and a by-pass provided in the valve allows sufficient steam to pass through to maintain the water boiling. The valve is closed by a thermostat in the steam vent C which releases a catch O, Fig. 5 (not shown) from engagement with an abutment N<SP>1</SP>, Fig. 5 (not shown) on the valve spindle holding the valve open against a spring.
