Abstract
750,215. Coating with metals. BRENNAN, R. M. March 17, 1952, No. 6845/52. Class 82(2). Metal strip is continuously produced by spraying metal onto a moving band so that an even layer is deposited. Metal, such as nickel, is sprayed from a nozzle 11 onto a stainless steel band 8 passing spirally round two drums 7 rotated by a variable-speed motor 1. The strip 9 so formed is coiled off onto a drum 10 also driven by the motor 1 through a slipping- clutch 3. The band passes through a scraping, cleaning, anodizing or lubricating chamber 13 before being presented to the nozzle 11. The drum shaft 12 may have a cooling passage. In a modification, the band is not continuous and the strip is built up on the three turns round a drum 32 as shown in Fig. 5. In a further modification, the band does not pass spirally round the drums but is of wide section and five sprays are used. The band may be composed of several adjacent narrow bands and the strip taken off as a full-width strip or as several narrow strips. Slitting tools may be provided to assist in taking off narrow strips. The thickness of strip may be controlled by banks of sprays or by varying the speed of the band. The sprays may be as described in Specification 735,695. The density and porosity of the strip may be controlled by controlling the atmospheric temperatures and constituency. Laminated metal may be produced and the strip may be subsequently rolled or heat treated. Different metals may be sprayed simultaneously to produce alloy strips. Stripping may be assisted by a parting knife. Specification 680,988 [Group XXII] also is referred to. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 735,695.
