Abstract

736,310. Coating with metals; granulating. BRENNAN, J. B. May 22, 1952, No. 12994/52. Class 82 (2). [Also in Group XXII] Metal strip is made by feeding molten metal to an atomizer, depositing the atomized particles in a layer on a temperature-controlled base and then stripping the layer so produced. By means of lugs 10, a metal belt 9 is fed by a cogwhsel 22 and constrained by housings 11 so that it travels in two adjacent circular paths, Fig. 2. In one of the circular paths, the belt forms the outer wall of a chamber 6 in which a vacuum or inert atmosphere may be maintained and in which rotates an atomizing device 14 to which molten metal is supplied from a crucible 1 and by which metal particles are deposited on the belt to form a layer 21. The temperature of the belt is controlled by cooling sprays 23. Within the other circular portion of the belt, the layer 21 is stripped by a knife 20 and coiled at 19. In a modification, Fig. 3, molten metal is fed to an atomizer 36 and sprayed on to an aluminium roller 38 which is in contact with an anodizing bath 40 within a vacuum or inert atmosphere chamber 54. The deposited layer 37a is stripped, rolled at 43 and may then have another layer of the same or of a different metal sprayed on from an atomizer 47 as the strip passes a roller 44, the surface of the strip being first heated by induction heaters 55 and the deposited layer being annealed by heaters 55a. The strip then passes between sizing rolls 52 to a coiling device 53. The roller belt on which the metal is sprayed may have a surface of anodized aluminium, graphite, another metal having an oxidized or lubricated surface or a ceramic surface.
