Abstract

748,708. Electric motors. SMITH, J. R. Sept. 15, 1954 [June 15, 1953], No. 16465/53. Class 35. A polyphase squirrel-cage motor has a discshaped stator 5 and a disc-shaped rotor 4, both formed from a coiled strip, a non-magnetic partition 6 being provided between the stator and the rotor. The stator windings are accommodated in a circumferential groove 16 and in radial slots 17 provided in face 18 of the disc 5. The rotor cage is located in a combination of openings in the disc face 10 formed by a circumferential groove 11, an annular groove 12 and interconnecting radial slots 13, the conductor bars 14 of the cage being placed in the radial slots 13 and the cage rings in the grooves 11, 12. Thus the stator windings and the rotor cage bars are located facing each other in close proximity. The rotor may be on a pump impeller shaft and may be liquid cooled. The Provisional Specification also includes an embodiment wherein slots are provided in the stator external periphery and these slots are closed by annular rings; such construction may be used with or without a partition.
