Auxiliary power plant for assisting, or temporarily replacing, a car battery in the starting of a cold engine, comprises a main-fed rectifier unit having output leads which can be plugged or clipped either in parallel with the battery, or directly across the engine starting motor, and an electromagnetic switch in the input leads to the rectifier unit operated by, say, the driver over a wandering lead with a push button at its end.
