Abstract

748,249. Carpets and rugs. WAAGE, J. April 2, 1954, No. 9672/54. Class 142 (4). Carpets and rugs are made by winding yarn 11 spirally on to flexible cores 17 or 23, winding one or more cores on to a drum carrying a backing material, securing the yarn to the backing with rubber latex, and cutting the yarn and removing the cores. Strips, ribbons, or waste cuttings may be used instead of yarn. Patterns may be obtained by printing the yarns before or after removal of the cores, or by using different coloured yarns. The cores may have two spiral layers of yarn thereon. The pile is cut by a rotating knife, indicated at 21, engaging slots in the cores. The top of the pile may be trimmed by a knife indicated at 26. The cores are made by extruding a thermoplastic material. An intermediate layer of linen 28 impregnated with rubber latex forming adhesive layers 29, 29a may be interposed between the yarns 11 and a canvas or hessian backing 27. In one embodiment the wound cores are stored on a drum and the backing and intermediate linen sheet are stored on separate beams. The ends of the cores, of the intermediate sheet, and of the backing sheet are all secured to a further beam and wound thereon, the intermediate sheet passing through a bath of adhesive. In a further embodiment (Fig. 5) a drum 70, equal in length and circumference to the size of rug required, is driven by a chain 75 from a motor 76b and a reel 79 holds a single continuous length of a wound core 77. The.drum 70 has a backing sheet 78 secured thereto and the core is wound on to the drum, passing over an adhesive coating device 85 and through guide means 82 on a screw 83 which is geared to rotate with the drum. A cutting device is subsequently substituted for the guide means 82 and the yarn severed and the core removed. The drum may be heated.
