A method of making a continuous non-woven web comprises superposing on a layer of strands a second layer the strands of which lie at a substantial angle to the strands of the first layer, cutting the web so formed along the length of the strands of the first layer so as to trim the strands of the second layer, and applying, before the trimming step, a third layer to the web comprising strands at least adjacent to the line of trimming to be effected. As shown (Fig. 1), a sheet 81 of non-woven fabric or other sheet material is guided on to the surface of a moving belt 83 by rollers 82, 84, whereafter it is overlaid with longitudinal threads 86 from a creel 87 which pass over comb 92 and are then coated with adhesive by applicator roll 93. The thread reinforced web and belt 83 carrying it are then guided about a stationary cylindrical mandrel 96 so as to form a helix thereon, the belt being pulled by means not shown. The mandrel (Fig. 2) has a helical spline 129 to guide the belt 83. Rotating carrier 97, mounted coaxially with the mandrel, applies threads 99 to the moving web in a direction normal to that of the previously applied threads 86. Just before or at the time belt 83 is removed from mandrel 96 a slitter 102 engages the web to sever the cross-threads 99 parallel to the marginal edge of the web. Threads 37 and 38 from spools 35 and 36, respectively, are fed through adhesive applicator 39 and thence are applied to opposite sides of, and close to, the longitudinal line along which cutter 102 will sever cross-threads 99 of web 110. Sheet 81 may be omitted, in which case threads 86 are supported directly by belt 83: alternatively belt 83 may be omitted, in which case sheet 81 serves as the support for threads 86. The thread-reinforced product 110 is separated from belt 83 (when this is used) which passes over rollers 103 and 104 while the product 110 passes about heated roller 106 in contact with heatresistant roller 107 to cause the adhesive applied to threads 86 to become more plastic and to flow about the junctions of threads 86 and 99. The product is then finally conveyed by roller 108 to slitting means 109 where it is cut to a desired width and wound about wind-up reel 111. Threads 37 and 38 may be trimmed away by slitting means 109. For threads 37 and 38 there may be substituted narrow tapes of suitable material. Specification 797,520 is referred to.
