Abstract

748,133. Spring suspension; preventing lateral canting. SYMONDSON, R. C. Feb. 12, 1954 [Feb. 13, 1953], No. 4169/53. Class 108 (2). [Also in Group XXXI] An arm 9 is pivoted on and extends radially from a steering head 3 carried by the sprung part of a motor vehicle and rotatable about the vertical steering axis of a front wheel 11, the arm being pivotally connected to another arm 10 pivoted to and extending radially from a steering tail carried by the wheel and rotatable about the steering axis, and the arms 9, 10 transmitting steering movement to the wheel. As further shown in Fig. 1, a frame crossmember 1 carries a rod or tube 2 near the top of which is carried on needle bearings the steering head 3 having an arm 4 connected by a link 5 to the vehicle steering mechanism (not shown) and an arm 6 connected by a track rod 7 with the track arm of the other front wheel. The steering tail is formed by the upper end of a bracket 12 carrying the front wheel, the ends of the bracket embracing the rod or tube 2. The wheel is spring suspended from the chassis frame by means of a longitudinal torsion rod 13 anchored to the frame and carrying at one end an arm 14 connected by a link 15 to the lower end of the wheel carrying bracket 12. As shown in Fig. 2, the arms 14 of the front wheels are interconnected through rubber bushings 18 and an anti-roll bar 17 supported in bearings on the chassis frame. In a modification, Fig. 3 (not shown), a frame member rests on a helical spring supported by the lower end of a wheel-carrying bracket, the spring being enclosed in telescopic sleeves. The upper end of the bracket carries the steering tail and a pillar on which slides the steering head, the head and tail being interconnected by scissor links. The pillar may enclose a shock absorber. In another modification, Fig. 4, the scissor links 29, 30 straddle a helical spring 34 enclosing a shock absorber 35, the steering head 31 being rotatably mounted on a pillar 32 carried by the chassis frame and the link 30 being pivoted to the steering tail 33 connected to the wheel stub axle. Alternatively a transverse leaf-spring may carry the stub axles brackets by shackles. In a further modification, Fig. 5, the chassis frame member 39 carries sleeves 40, 41 which slide upon a pillar 38 carrying a cranked stub axle 36, the head 42 and tail 43 being carried by the sleeve 40 and axle 36. The wheel may be spring suspended either by connecting the axle 36 with a torsion spring or by increasing the -diameter of the pillar 38 to enclose a spring suspension and a hydraulic damper.
