748,019. Automatic speed control systems. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Nov. 27, 1953 [Nov. 27, 1952], No. 30090/52. Class 38 (4). The invention relates to stabilizing the regulated speed of a D.C. motor, which is controlled by varying the motor field, and comprises obtaining a stabilizing control voltage either from an auxiliary winding on the motor pole, or from a transformer or capacitor connected to the field, Figs. 3, 4 (not shown). As shown, the speed regulator comprises a carbon pile R6 in the circuit of the motor field L2, having its operating coil energized by the rectified output of a frequency-sensitive (resonant) circuit C1, L7 fed from an alternator A driven by the motor. According to the invention an auxiliary coil L9 mounted on the motor pole is connected in series with the regulator coil to provide a transient opposing voltage. Alternatively the coil L9 may be connected to an auxiliary coil on the regulator. Where the alternator is supplying a load in addition to the frequency discriminator, its voltage may be controlled by a carbon pile regulator supplied with the rectified output voltage, and a rate-of-change component from a transformer connected across the alternator field, Fig. 2 (not shown).
