[Also in Groups VI and XXVI] A cutting and/or agitating device in the base 3 of a mixing vessel consists of two upwardly inclined blades A, D, two blades B, E lying in a common horizontal plane and two downwardly inclined blades C, F, all arranged at equal intervals in plan upon a drive head 12 on a driving spindle 7 and secured by a nut 21 having upwardly flaring sides which operates in conjunction with the blades to effect control of the vortex produced by the rotation of the blades. The upper cutter blades A, D, are chamfered along their lower edges to throw material under treatment downwards and the lower cutter blades C, F, are chamfered along their upper edges to throw the material upwards; the centre cutter blades B, E are chamfered on both sides to effect a uniform cutting action on the material thrown towards them by the upper and lower blades. The drive head 12 has a skirt 13 with an inclined inner wall 14 closely spaced from a similarly inclined wall 15 on an outer sleeve 1, the speed of rotation being such as to counteract any tendency of the material to creep through the space between the walls 14, 15. Within the sleeve 1 is a bearing sleeve 6 of an anti-friction material such as lead bronze loaded carbon. A washer 10 and a spring washer 11 between the lower end of the bearing sleeve 6 and a shoulder 9 on the spindle 7 maintain a static seal between the upper end of the bearing sleeve 6 and the drive head 12.
