Abstract

A process for the production of tantalum powder comprises subjecting a tantalum powder to physical conditions which will remove gaseous impurities, allowing the powder to absorb hydrogen, disintegrating the powder to a fine state, subjecting the fine powder to physical conditions sufficient to remove the adsorbed hydrogen and allowing the powder to adsorb an inert gas. The gases may be removed by heating the powders by eddy currents in a molybdenum crucible to 1700-2000 DEG C. under a pressure of 10-5 m.m. of mercury. Hydrogen or the inert gas, e.g. argon or dry air, may be added to the vacuum chamber which is allowed to return to atmospheric temperature and pressure. The powder finally produced is stated to be particularly suitable for the production of capacitors.
