Abstract
Fine metal powder is prepared by a process which includes producing a metal vapour by vacuum evaporation or electrical discharge and subjecting the vapour to such conditions and vacuum or low pressure that it is condensed as a fine powder. The metal vapour may be formed by evaporation of the metal by means of an electrically-heated, heat-resistant filament, boat or crucible, by subjecting the metal in the form of a filament to an electric discharge, or by subjecting the vapour of a compound of the metal to an electrical discharge. In the second method a metal wire and an electrode are included in a charging circuit and the distance between them is reduced until discharge occurs. In the third method vapour of the metal compound, with or without a reducing gas, may be passed through a space between electrodes which are included in a charging circuit. This method, in an example, is applied to the production of titanium powder from a vapour of titanium tetraiodide. The metal may be condensed as powder by passing the vapour into contact with an inert gas at low pressure, or by passing a stream of inert gas into contact with the vapour.
