Abstract

745,869. Electrolytic pickling. UNITED STATES STEEL CORPORATION. Dec. 9, 1953 [ Tuly 8, 1953], No. 34323/53. Class 41. Electrolytic pickling apparatus for strip S comprises electrolyte-containing means, e.g. tanks 4, 14, conducting entry and exit rolls 2, 28 for the strip, a plurality of electrodes arranged in tandem, 8, 10, 18, 20, a plurality of electric generators 30, 32, 34, 36, means, e.g. rheostats 30R, 32R, 34R, 36R in control fields 30F, 32F, 34F, 36F for independently varying the quantity and direction of the current produced by each generator, means connecting one terminal of the first generator 30 to the roll 2 and means 40 connecting the second terminal thereof to the first electrode 8, means connecting the terminal of the last generator 36 to the roll 28 and means 46 connecting the second terminal thereof to the last electrodes 20, and means 38 connecting the first terminals of all the generators together and preferably to earth. The second terminals of generators 32, 34, are connected by lines 42, 44 to electrodes 10, 18 respectively. Rubber rolls 6, 12, 16, 22, 26 guide the strip S through the tanks 4, 14 and a rinse tank 24 containing water and/or water sprays. In a modification, one pickling tank only is employed, the strip S passing horizontally therethrough between spaced pairs of horizontal electrodes, the circuit connections being as described above.
