Abstract

785,932. Electrolytic cells. ORONZIO DE NORA IMPIANTI ELECTROCHIMICI. March 2, 1954 [March 2, 1953; Dec. 19, 1953], No. 6105/54. Class 41. [Also in Group XXXVII] A method of protecting the cathode B of an electrolytic cell 2 during disconnection of the cell 2 out of a series of cells comprises breaking the electrical connection between the anode A of the cell 2 and the cathode B of the adjacent upstream cell 1 and connecting the cathode of the cell 2 to the cathode of the cell 1. Each cell 1 or 2 comprises an anode A and a mercury cathode B, the cells 1, 2 being connected in series from a bar 3 through a bar 4 to the first anode A and from the corresponding cathode B by a bar 31 to the second anode bar 41 and so on. The bar 31 has an extension 7. Members 5, 9 are fixed on a bar 8 which is rotatable to break the connection between bars 3<SP>1</SP>, 41 and to make a connection between bars 3<SP>1</SP>, 71, thus cutting the cell 2 out of the electrolysis circuit, whilst simultaneously completing a circuit from a battery 10 to the anode A and cathode B of the cell 2 through the bridging of contacts. 9a, 9b by the member 9 to supply a protective polarizing voltage, e.g. 1 volt, across the electrodes A, B of the cell 2. At a cathode current density of 0.15 amps./sq. ft. A contact B is automatically closed when the main circuit breaker is opened, e.g. manually or due to a power failure, to actuate a relay 14 and close the polarizing circuit. U.S.A. Specification 2,508,523 is referred to.
