Abstract

745,547. Turning; damping vibrations. CALOW, T., [trading as CALOW & CO., T.]. May 13, 1953, No. 13418/53. Class 83 (3). An arrangement for rough-turning rod or tube material by passing it through a revolving cutter-head comprises guide means pressing on the work by spring pressure and arranged directly in front of and behind the cutter-head. In a first embodiment a rough bar 3, Fig. 1, is moved longitudinally in the direction 2 through a rotating cutter-head 1. The guide means comprise housings 6, 11 respectively in which jaws 8, 12 are pressed against the shaft by springs 7, 10. A further embodiment of a supporting means comprises a housing 33, Fig. 2 carrying a sleeve 32 with cam faces 31 acting on jaws 29. The latter bear against the bar 4 and if the bar is not circular the pressure on the jaws will vary, thus moving the ring 32. A lever 35 is connected to this ring and is secured to a damping spring 38 and weight 39 with adjustment 41, 42. The damping springs and weights may be within the supporting device and the jaws provided with rollers so that the support may be rotated. The jaws may also be provided with magnets to hold them against the work and act as damping means at the same time.
