Abstract
745,285. Hardening metals. ELECTRIC FURNACE CO., Ltd. Oct. 7, 1953 [Oct. 14, 1952], No. 25677/52. Class 72. A method of hardening a rigid elongated metal shaft or bar comprises supporting the workpiece at spaced points along its length on either side of an electromagnetic inductor through the heating zone of which the workpiece extends, and producing relative movement parallel to the axis of the workpiece between the workpiece and the inductor to cause the latter to heat the workpiece progressively along its length, and is characterised in that, during the heat-treatment, the workpiece passes through an intermediate supporting guide, fixed adjacent to the inductor, which prevents lateral distortion of the workpiece caused by the bending of its heated portion in the region of the inductor. The supporting guide, which may be a close-fitting liquidcooled bush, may be located in between the inductor and quenching device, within the inductor itself, or may be mounted on the side of the inductor remote from the quenching device. Fig. 2 shows an inductor-quench assembly for the simultaneous treatment of two verticallymounted workpieces and comprises an inductor 24, quenching rings 26 and two pairs of bushes 33, 35. The upper bushes 33, which are mounted in a water-cooled support 34, are located close to the top of the inductor and thus restrain any lateral distortion of the workpieces adjacent to the inductor where the heating is greatest, and the lower bushes 35 provide lateral support below the heating zone. In the embodiment shown in Fig. 5, a workpiece 40 is passed longitudinally through an inductor 44, within which is incorporated a guide sleeve 46 for supporting the workpiece against distortion, and a quenching ring 45. Immediately beyond the quenching ring 45 is provided a second supporting guide in the form of a saddle block 47, on which the lower surface of the workpiece can rest to prevent any sagging, and beyond the said saddle block an auxiliary quenching ring 48 is mounted to cool the workpiece further. Specification 585,416, [Group XXX], is referred to.
