Abstract

744,745. Treating coal. NATIONAL COAL BOARD. Nov. 6, 1952 [Nov. 6, 1951], No. 25925/51. Class 55 (1). A process for treating coal comprises subjecting the coal in particulate form as a fluidized mass to the action of a gas containing free oxygen at a temperature considerably above that at which' substantial carbonization would normally occur the operating conditions being such that the coal loses part of its volatile matter without substantial carbonization or agglomeration of the coal particles and so that a coal of lower volatile content is produced. The gas containing free oxygen may be hot combustion gases and part of the heat for the treatment may be obtained by partial combustion of the coal. In an example a coal was treated at 500‹ C. for 30 minutes with a gas containing 8 per cent by volume of free oxygen and the volatile content of the coal was reduced from 38 per cent to 23 per cent. In apparatus for carrying out the process the particulate coal is charged from a hopper by a worm 15 into a fluidized treatment zone 13 having an upper portion of increased diameter. Air and a fuel gas are supplied, through compressors 20 and 21 respectively into a burner 26 and the hot combustion gases containing free oxygen pass into the zone 13 through line 17 and fluidize the coal therein. The gases pass out through a cooler 6A and an electrostatic precipitator 6 to remove entrained fines and tarry matter from the gases. Treated coal is removed by line 29 and passes through a cooler 4 which may be of the type described in Specifications 731,154, 744,744, [both in Group XIII]. The treated coal passes from cooler 4 by line 32 where it may be mixed with a pulverized product obtained by coking the tar and coal dust separated in precipitator 6, the mixture being then briquetted and carbonized. Specification 719,225 also is referred to.
