Abstract

744,689. Cycle driving-mechanism.. MAYERS, H. A. July 5, 1954 [July 3, 1953], No. 18552/53. Class 136 (2). A pedal cycle is driven by means which include a chain wheel 13 fixedly secured to the hub 12 of the rear wheel 11, a pedal operated crankshaft 16, a second chain wheel 15 mounted concentrically with the crankshaft 16 and connected with the hub chain wheel 13 by a driving chain 14 and a free wheel mechanism 23, 25 comprising a direct automatic uni-directional coupling between the chain wheel 15 and the crankshaft 16. The chain wheel 15 is in the form of a toothed annulus having its inner circumference 20 supported on a roller bearing 21 carried by a plate 22 mounted on a boss 30 integral with the crank 17 and connected to the crank shaft 16. The chain wheel 15 carries a number of pawls 23 which are urged in an inward direction by springs 24 so as to engage with a ratchet wheel 25 secured by screws 26 to the plate 22. The rear wheel 11 is intended to be driven by a power unit having its, driving member in frictional engagement with the tyre 9 of the wheel 11. During operation of the power unit in the direction of the arrow 31 (Fig. 2) the chain wheel 15 will be caused to rotate. If on pedalling the crank shaft 16 and ratchet wheel 25 are rotated at a higher speed than the chain wheel 15, the ratchet wheel will engage the pawls 23 and drive the chain wheel 15 and thus the wheel 11.
