Abstract

A butadiene-styrene-acrylonitrile terpolymer is prepared by polymerizing monomeric butadiene in the presence of a polymerization catalyst at below 60 DEG C. to form a polymer having a specific viscosity of at least 0.3, adding a mixture of monomeric styrene and acrylonitrile and polymerizing until the resultant resin has a composition of from 23-41 per cent butadiene, 10-30 per cent acrylonitrile and 29-67 per cent styrene. This resin has a brittle point temperature below - 20 DEG C. and a stiffness modulus at 30 DEG C. of at least 50,000 lbs. per square inch. The polymerization of the butadiene may be taken to 75 per cent conversion and the unreacted butadiene distilled off. The second polymerization may take place at 30-90 DEG C. in aqueous emulsion, to substantial completion under a nitrogen atmosphere using a persulphate as catalyst. Emulsifiers (sodium oleate), viscosity control agents (tertiary hexadecyl mercaptan) and the usual polymerization ingredients, may also be present. Specification 658,301 is referred to.
