The cable-operated mechanism of Specification 723,953 is modified by providing the fixed rack bar 16 in addition to the spaced notches 19, 20 defining the gear-engaging positions by means of a peg 21 on the pivotal link 22 with a curved cam surface 26 that provides a rest for the peg 21 corresponding to a further gear position. The socket 23 acts as an abutment for the link 22 when it is in its " high gear ratio " position with the peg 21 resting on the cam surface 26 of the rack bar 16.
