Abstract

The invention comprises p - aminosalicylhydroxamic acid of the formula <FORM:0744307/IV(a)/1> and its preparation by reducing p-nitrosalicylhydroxamic acid, obtained by the action of hydroxylamine on an alkyl p-nitrosalicylate, p-nitrosalicylamide or the acid halide of an O-acyl derivative of p-nitrosalicylic acid, the reduction being effected with substantially three molecular proportions of hydrogen in the presence of a hydrogenation catalyst. Suitably the catalyst is a finely-divided metal of Group VIII of the periodic table. In an example ethyl p-nitrosalicylate is treated with hydroxylamine hydrochloride and alkali and the resulting 4-nitrosalicylhydroxami acid is reduced with palladium - charcoal to give 4 - aminosalicylhydroxamic acid.
