A method of controlling the carbon content in surface layers of ferrous articles comprises providing an enclosed space about the surface, providing within the enclosed space a dry, rigid, self-supporting body of an oxidising-decarburising agent and an inert binder, and heating the articles to the reaction temperature. The rigid body may comprise iron oxide and clay. In a casehardening operation the rigid body prevents case-hardening of the protected surface, and in the heat treatment of a high carbon steel article the carbon content of the protected surface may be reduced, the amount of reduction may be controlled by varying the size or number of the rigid bodies. As shown, applied to the case hardening of the outer surface of an annular ring, the ring 32 is placed on a support 34, a rigid body 38 is placed within the ring, and a cover 36 laid on the ring. When the ring is case hardened the surface 30 is protected against carburising and remains soft. The shape of the rigid body may be varied to suit the shape of the surface to be protected.
