Abstract

A silver or silver alloy article is provided with an anti-tarnishing coating of 50 to 500 thickness produced by vacuum deposition or other methods as set forth in the parent Specification and consisting of at least one oxide of a metal included in the 2nd to the 5th groups of the periodic system, with the interposition between the coating and the surface of the article of an anchoring layer, also produced by vacuum deposition or cathode sputtering, of 20 to 100 thickness and consisting of one of the metals iridium, aluminium, gallium, cadmium, tin, antimony and tellurium. The oxide layer may be an oxide of the metal of the anchoring layer and in this case no separate coating step need be used as the anchoring layer will oxidise in contact with the air.
