743,724. Preventing incrustation. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION. June 21,1954 [March 20. 1953], No. 7721/53. Class 123(1) A method of inhibiting scale formation in steam boilers, condensers, &c., and especially in salt water evaporators consists in adding to the water fed to the plant a small proportion, for example, 4 ozs. per ton of water, of impalpable silica, that is, silica of a particle size of about 50 microns produced, for example, by grinding a silica gel which has been dried and heated in vacuo to a flour-like consistency, the silica serving to lower the pH of the water and to provide nuclei on which the scaleforming solids are deposited. A small proportion of one or more surface active of sequestering agents such as the sodium salt of di-naphthyl methane di-sulphonic acid, of bis-imino di-acetic acid or of ethylene diamine tetra acetic acid and an anti-foaming agent such as a polyethylene glycol ester-ether compound may be added to the silica or introduced separately into the feed water.
