Abstract

[Also in Divisions C2 and G2] Enriched colloidal silver is produced by treating a dilute aqueous dispersion of silver, obtained by reducing silver salts, with an agent capable of flocculating colloidal silver in a medium of pH of 3 to 8, separating the flocculate at a pH of 3 to 8, redispersing it in enriched form in a protective colloid in the presence of citrate ions. The protective colloid is preferably gelatine. Suitable flocculating agents comprise the colourless compounds containing at least one acid group imparting solubility in water, at least one six-membered heterocyclic group consisting of 3 to 4 carbon atoms and 3 or 2 nitrogen atoms, and at least one aromatic residue, for example, as described in Specification 1,041,085. Other flocculating agents include those compounds obtained by condensing a diaminodiphenyl sulphonic acid particularly of Formula I where X stands for a methyl group or for a hydrogen atom, with a thiophene, 2,5-dicarboxylic acid dihalide in the molecular ratio of 1: 2 to 2: 1. The flocculate is advantageously redispersed at a pH of 5 to 7, and the citrate ions are preferably added in the form of a watersoluble citrate, e.g. sodium citrate. The dispersions advantageously contain 1 to 10% of metallic silver, 4 to 10% of the protective colloid and 3 to 8% of citrate ions (calculated as citric acid, referred to dry gelatine).
