Abstract

743,437. Scoop arm earth excavators. ATELIERS DE POCLAIN. June 22, 1953, No. 17225/53. Class 68(1) In a mechanical shovel or excavator of the kind in which the bucket is carried by an arm pivoted to a slewing boom, the arm and boom are luffed by at least one pair of hydraulic jacks 18, 11 articulated to the arm; the, or each, pair of jacks being disposed in a vertical plane and acting in opposite directions. The shovel 17 is mounted on a boom 16 pivoted at 15 to an arm 13 which is pivoted at 14 to a frame 12 adapted to rotate about a vertical axis by a pair of hydraulic thrustors 11, the piston rods of which rotate the shaft 5 through either a rack and pinion mechanism, or an arrangement comprising a pair of bands wrapped around and secured to the shaft and each connected to one of the piston rods, (Figs. 3, 4 not shown). An air spring (Fig. 5 not shown) is incorporated in the hydraulic system to prevent pressure surges damaging the piping. Figs. 6, 7, (not shown) illustrate hydraulic brakes acting on the shaft 5 and adapted to be actuated by the pressure in the hydraulic circuit feeding thrustors 11. The hydraulic circuit may include means for controlling the carburetter of the engine driving the pump so that the fuel supply to the engine decreases when the pressure in the circuit falls and vice-versa. In the modification shown in Fig. 8 the shovel is secured to a beam 82 which is constrained by a bar 83 to remain parallel to arm 13 in all positions of the bucket.
