Abstract

743,294. Sleeve couplings. DEPARTMENT OF AIR, SECRETARY OF. Aug. 25, 1953 [Sept. 12, 1952], No. 23488/53. Class 38 (1). In order to maintain a constant characteristic impedance at a joint between two concentric cables, the joint is made by first cutting back the dielectric 2 and shields 3 from their ends, joining the cores 1 by a sleeve 10 and providing ferrules 6 between the outer insulation 4 and shields 3 so that the ferrules are in abutting contact, the shape of the sleeve 10 and ferrules 6 being such that the characteristic impedance between them over the whole air gap is the same as that of the cables to be joined. The cables are clamped together by nuts 8 engaging flanges 7 on the ferrules and a threaded sleeve 9. In another embodiment (Fig. 2, not shown), a unit is provided by means of which a bend can be formed, while in yet another embodiment (Fig. 3, not shown), overlapping ferrules are provided with inner surfaces curved to correspond to the outer convex surface of the core-connecting sleeve.
