Abstract

In making highly polymeric polymethylene terephthalates by polymerization of a bis-(omega-hydroxy-n-alkyl) terephthalate, an aluminate which is soluble in the reaction mixture is used as catalyst. Suitable aluminates are those of the alkali or alkaline earth metals. The catalyst is preferably added as a fine powder dispersed, or dissolved, in glycol. The amount used should be such that the product contains less than 0.05 per cent of aluminium. If the bis-(hydroxyalkyl) terephthalate is formed by ester interchange a catalyst for this reaction, e.g. calcium acetate, may also be employed. Both catalysts may be added at the beginning of the ester interchange reaction. In example (1) polycondensation of bis-(hydroxyethyl) terephthalate is catalysed with sodium aluminate and in example (4) zinc aluminate is employed together with a small amount of titanium dioxide. In example (2) the polymer is formed from dimethyl terephthalate and ethylene glycol using a mixture of calcium acetate and calcium aluminate as catalysts. Titanium dioxide is added in the second step of the reaction. Example (3) is similar, employing a mixture of calcium acetate and sodium aluminate and no titanium dioxide.
