Abstract
742,760. Coating electrical conductors with plastic material. TELEFONAKTIE-BOLAGET L. M. ERICSSON. Sept. 16, 1953 [Sept. 29, 1952], No. 25610/53. Class 87 (2). In a method for making a foam insulated conductor, the plastic material (e.g. polyethylene, polystyrol, polyvinylchloride, polyvinylchloride acetate) is fed through a heated cylinder 3 by screw 2 where it is heated partly by friction and partly by heat from the cylinder and through a percolator plate 4 where a gas such as propane, butane or methyl chloride, is fed through input 6 to dissolve in the material which then passes through further percolator plates 7, 11, in extrusion head 8, to a heated nozzle 12 where it is extruded and expands around a conductor 9 which may be electrically pre-heated by transformer 15. The percolator plate 4 may be such that gas supplied through feed pipes 18, 19, Fig. 2, is distributed in two halves of the percolator plate by axial and radial channels 20, the material entering through apertures 17 and being pressed out through holes 21. The gas supply zone may be extended in such a manner that the cylinder is provided with several percolator plates and input terminals for the gas or the material may pass to contact with the gas, through a chamber provided in the screw length, Fig. 3 (not shown), and where an alteration of screw pitch or thread may be provided to prevent an accumulation of material. The apparatus may be provided with two or several parallel screws.
