973,371. Cables. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd. May 3, 1963 [May 9, 1962], No. 17857/62. Heading H1A. A coaxial cable is manufactured by sticking granular material on to one surface of a metal tape which is then wrapped around the inner conductor with the granulated material inside and which subsequently acts as the outer conductor. As shown in Fig. 1, a copper tape 1 is led from a reel 2 through rollers 3 and 4 which coat one surface of the tape with a sticky solution of polystyrene (or polyisobutylene) in benzene. A controlled feed supply hopper 7 deposits pre-expanded granules of polystyrene or P.T.F.E. on the sticky surface and the metal tape is then passed through a drying oven before it is folded round a copper wire 9 as it passes through a forming die 11. The completed cable is then collected on take-up drum 13. A further embodiment is described in which the completed cable having polystyrene insulation is passed through a steam, infra-red or hot air oven where the granules undergo further expansion and coalesce to give a homogeneous dielectric. The granules may be of bead or ball shape and the granular insulating material may be caused to adhere to the metal tape by electrostatic attraction.
