Abstract
742,045. Sliding-clasp fasteners. AERO ZIPP FASTENERS, Ltd. Nov. 9, 1954 [Dec. 1, 1953], No. 33351/53. Drawings to Specification. Class 44. A method of manufacturing a sliding-clasp fastener, which at least in part, is curved in the general plane of the fastener stringers, comprises the steps of imparting a curvature to at least one of the stringers by stretching or shrinking the same or a part thereof, and before, during or after the stretching or shrinking, applying a material to the stringers which substantially maintains the curvature imparted to the stringers. Preferably, two stringers are interlocked by interengaging their interlocking members, the interlocked stringers then being jointly stretched or shrunk. The material which may be applied by spraying or dipping may be a sizing, or starching material or alternatively the stringers may be coated or impregnated with a suitable plastic material, or in a modification, a settable plastic material, for example, polyvinyl chloride, may be woven into the stringer tapes, the threads of the plastic material being responsive to setting treatment. The stringers may be stretched by being drawn round a suitably curved surface. Shrinking may be effected by applying the stringers loosely to a suitably curved surface and wetting the stringers to shrink the same on to the surface. The stringers may be sandwiched between the curved surface and a mating auxiliary. surface, which may be heated.
