The spring abutment plate 18 of a poppet valve is arranged to project slightly beyond the end of the valve stem so that the valve - operating mechanism 25 on the upstroke first contacts the plate 18 and moves it relatively to the valve stem' to relieve the valve of the load of the spring, after r which the member 25 contacts end of the valve stem to open the valve which, being unloaded, is free to rotate. The plate 18 is provided with a large diameter hole 21 through which the end of the valve stem can be passed and which adjoins a smaller diameter hole 22 adapted to engage with a reduced diameter part 17 of the valve stem, the hole 22 being stepped to allow the plate to seat on a shoulder at the end of the part 17. The upper end 15 of the valve guide 13 is chamfered or curved helically and is provided with a larger clearance at 16 than in the remainder of the guide. In a modification, the part of the valve stem below the groove 17 is conical and seats against a conical wall of the hole 22.
