Abstract

741,326. Discharge-tube amplifying circuits. SMITH & SONS (ENGLAND), Ltd., S. June 24, 1954 [April 23, 1953], No. 11277/53. Class 40 (6). In a D.C. amplifier comprising a main D.C.- coupled amplifier and an auxiliary amplifier for correcting drift, the latter is provided with an initial stage of magnetic amplification and positive feedback is provided between the output and input of the auxiliary amplifier. An input signal, Fig. 1, is applied over resistor 6 to a main D.C.-coupled amplifier 1 and also over an isolating resistor 10 to an auxiliary magnetic amplifier 9 fed from an A.C. source 12, preferably of about 10 kc/s. The output is applied over resistors 13, 14 as negative and positive feedback to the input of the amplifier 9 thus increasing the input impedance and stabilizing the forward gain of the auxiliary amplifier 9. The output from resistor 15 is added to the input signal in the first stage of the main amplifier so that the D.C. level is enhanced, higher frequencies being unaffected since the gain of amplifier 9 falls off rapidly with frequency. Since the overall gain of the circuit is determined by the negative feed-back resistors 5, 6 the effect of drift is reduced by a factor substantially equal to the gain of amplifier 9. In a modification, Fig. 2, resistors 17, 16 are arranged between the output and input of the main amplifier 1 having a ratio equal to the gain of the amplifier. The potential at point A is applied to the input side A of resistor 10. Any drift in potential causes a compensating potential to be applied to the first stage of the main amplifier 1.
