Abstract

741,207. Ball and socket vehicle couplings. TAYLOR, W. L. Dec. 3, 1954 [Oct. 14, 1953], No. 28261/53. Class 103 (5). A ball and socket coupling comprises a socket 10, a locking block 16 having an end 17 the curved surface of which corresponds to the curvature of the ball, but not centrally of the ball, and a plug 22 for moving the block 16 longitudinally to unlock the ball. The block 16 is provided with a hole 20 having a shoulder 21 against which a spring 24 is pressed, the plug 22 passing through the hole and having a head 23 and a collar 25, situated when the ball is locked, in a hole 14 and a keyhole slot 12 respectively in the housing 10, the spring 24 being seated against the head 23. In operation, by pulling the screwed top 27 of the plug upwardly and compressing the spring 24, the head 23 can be drawn out of the opening 14 and the collar out of the keyhole slot 12, so that by sliding movement of the top 27 the block can be disengaged from the ball.
