Abstract
740,266. Cathode-ray tubes. ELECTRIC & MUSICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. March 10, 1954 [April 9, 1953], No. 9604/53. Class 39 (1). During the vaporization of photo-conductive material such as selenium or tellurium on the target 2, the cathode 3 is protected by a movable plug 7 closing an aperture in a partition 5. As shown enlarged in Fig. 2, the partition may be a cupshaped glass member with an inner lip 10 providing a rest position when inoperative (dotted), and the plug a steel ball or a glass-coated steel-cored ball. The partition may alternatively be metallized or of metal or ceramic and the ball may be of ceramic or glass or a magnetic alloy inert to the photo-conductive material. The ball may be moved by gravity, directly by magnetic attraction, or by a wire connected to a magnetically movable slug in a side-tube, Fig. 3 (not shown). The partition and plug may be conical.
