Class 56 An optical glass with a refractive index of at least 1.69 and free from thorium and beryllium oxides comprises (percentage parts by weight) SiO 2 3-10; B 2 O 3 28-35; La 2 O 3 17-25; CaO 10-15; ZnO 8-14; PbO+ BaO+SrO 1-18, the alkaline earth oxide+ zinc oxide content being between 29.5 and 45 and the lead oxide+alkaline earth oxide+zinc oxide content being between 33.5 and 45. The lead oxide is from 0-8 and the BaO+SrO from 0-10. Up to 8 per cent SrO 2 may be added. Preferred ranges within these limits are given, also particular examples.
