Glasses having high ultra-violet transmission consist of (percentage parts by weight) Al 2 O 3 10-13, P 2 O 5 55-68, B 2 O 3 3-6, SiO 2 0-5, K 2 O 2-5, BaO 5-18, ZnO 0-10, MgO 0-10 and CaO 0-10. The ZnO plus MgO content is from 0 to 13 and the BaO + ZnO + MgO is from 13 to 22. Up to 10 per cent of the Ba, Zn, Mg and CaO may be replaced by at least one colouring oxide, e.g. Ni 2 O 3 or CoO.
