Abstract

739,237. Ferris wheels. SETTIMO, E. Jan. 15, 1954 [Jan. 21, 1953], No. 1324/54. Class 132(1). A ferris wheel having seats round its periphery is mounted to rotate about a horizontal axis on a base which is rotatable about a vertical axis intersecting the horizontal axis within the width of the wheel. As shown, the ferris wheel comprises two large rings 1, 2 carried by spokes 3 on a hub 4 rotatable on a pivot 5 supported on two gantries 6 and the wheel is driven in the direction of the arrow 8. The gantries 6 are mounted on a pivoted platform 13 which is driven by electric motors 16 which, through gearing, rotate rollers 18 engaging a circular rail 19. Rings 1, 2 are connected by rods 25 which are held by nuts 26 and shoulders 27 but are free to pivot. Adjacent each rod 25 a disc 30 is welded to one of the rings and carries a toothed wheel 32 which engages and rotates a toothed wheel 35 mounted in bearings on the rod 25. Suspended from each wheel 35 by rod 11 is a seat 12.
