Abstract
735,533. Windscreen cleaners. TRICO PRODUCTS CORPORATION. Oct. 28, 1952 [Oct. 29, 1951], No. 27082/52. Class-138 (1). Relates to the combination of a windshield wiper with a windshield having a frontal portion 1 of relatively slight curvature and the lateral portion 2 extending rearwardly from the portion 1 and connected thereto by a portion 3 of relatively sharp curvature, comprising an inner rockshaft 18 mounted below the portion 1, an outer rock-shaft 19 mounted below the portion 2, a windshield wiper arm carrying a wiper blade mounted on each rockshaft and means for oscillating the arms in unison, the rock-shafts 18, 19 being arranged in such proximity to one another than the outer arcs of the paths of the wiper blades intersect at a point on the portion 1 in or adjacent a vertical plane through the axis of the inner rock-shaft 18. There are two lateral portions 2 and a pair of wipers 4, 5 for each side of the windshield. Referring to one side of the windshield, only, e.g. the right-hand side, Fig. 2, the shaft 18 for the primary wiper 4 is mounted directly in front of the driver whilst the secondary wiper 5 has its shaft 19 mounted radially of the bend 3. As shown, the wipers 4, 5 both wipe a common area A which is thus wiped twice the number of times during each wiping cycle, as the areas B on either side thereof. The two pairs of wipers are driven from a common motor 15 which may be pneumatically or hydraulically operated. The shaft 16 of the motor drives an arm 17, the ends of which are connected with links 28 connected by ball joints 27 with further links 25. The links 25 are connected by ball joints 26 with rocker arms 23, 24 for the shafts 18, 19. The ball joints'enable the drive to be transmitted to the wipers even though the shafts 18, 19 diverge outwardly with respect to each other and with respect to the shaft 16. In order that the wipers 5 shall oscillate faster than the wipers 4, the rocker arms 24 are made shorter than the rocker arms 23. Each wiper blade is carried in a flexible backing strip connected to secondary yokes carried by a primary yoke attached to the wiper arm in the manner described in Specification 702,849. When parked the four wiper blades lie in line, along the bottom margin of the windshield and between the shafts 19. Provision may be made, in well-known manner, to effect the parking, e.g. as shown in Specification 547,808, [Group XXVI]. In a modification, the shafts of each pair of wipers are drivably connected by an endless cable passing around pulleys on the shafts, the primary shafts having rocker arms connected to the motor through links, as already described. The cables are guided on to the angularly displaced shaft pulleys by suitable sheaves disposed between the shafts of each pair of wipers.
