[Also in Group VI] The thickness of a carpet of tobacco formed on a perforated belt 7 by a tobacco opener 2 is measured by feeler rollers 10 distributed across the width of the carpet and acting through levers 11 14 on a set of equalizer bars 15 ... 18 which derive a measurement of the average thickness of the carpet from the individual measurements of the rollers 10 and the speed of the tobacco-feeding device is adjustable either manually or automatically in accordance with variations in the average thickness of the carpet. The feeler rollers 10 actuate an indicator 19 through a lever system 11 ... 17 and the speed of the opener 2 is adjusted by a hand lever 21 to maintain the tobacco carpet at a correct thickness. The speed may alternatively be adjusted automatically.
