Abstract

Iron powder suitable for sinter-metallurgical purposes is produced from blast furnace dust by magnetically separating from the dust a small proportion of iron and iron oxide particles suitable, after reduction, for use in powder metallurgy, and reducing these particles to iron powder. 9 to 10 per cent of the dust, of which 70 per cent may have a grain size 0.12-0.3 mm., may be separated, the remainder being returned to the blast furnace process. The magnetic separation may take place in an alternating field and the grain size composition of thee concentrate may be modified by alteration to the frequency and/or current intensity. The magnetic separation may be followed by a wet mechanical separation. The iron oxide may be reduced by hydrogen at 800 DEG C. without sintering or altering the powder characteristics of the material.
