732,875. Vehicle bodies. ALVIS, Ltd. April 20, 1954 [June 27, 1953], No. 17888/53. Class 108 (1). [Also in Group X] A motor vehicle has a hollow rigid engine bulkhead with front and rear walls 20, 21, which impedes the transmission of heat and sound to the driver and passengers, between which walls a ventilating air flow passes from scoops 32 to outlets 31 (see Group X). A fan 37 may draw air through a heater 36 and pass it into the driving compartment, and via a pipe 41 and a transverse duct 42 to de-misting nozzles 43. The rigidity of the bulkhead may be increased by securing together internal depressions on the plates 20, 21, or the bulkhead may be otherwise reinforced. To accmodate a clutch housing the wall 21 may be bulged rearwardly and centrally, and the wall 20 may have a central opening sealingly engaged with the wall 21. Controls may pass through the bulkhead in tubes provided with resilient grommets.
