Abstract
732,423. Earth-boring apparatus. NAAMLOOZE VENNOOTSCHAP DE BATAAFSCHE PETROLEUM MAATSCHAPPIJ. July 20, 1953 [July 21, 1952], No. 20091/53. Class 85. A well-drilling system comprises a tubular drill string having a rotary drill bit connected to the lower end thereof, with the interposition of a pair of mutually non-rotatable telescoping members consisting of a cylindrical member and a tubular plunger member mounted for limited sliding movement in the cylindrical member, and means for supplying fluid under pressure to the interior of the drill string, the telescoping members having an unobstructed axial bore therethrough, so that the load on the bit has two components the first due to the combined weights of the bit, the one of said members to which it is coupled and of any other members interposed between them, and the second a function solely of the fluid pressure drop prevailing across the jet openings provided in the bit. As shown, a housing 11 is secured to the lower end of a drill string 13, the housing carrying an inner tubular member 15 provided with a drill bit 17. Part 22 of the housing 11 is hexagonal in cross-section, the outer surface of the member 15 being similarly shaped, to prevent relative rotation. The member 15 has limited sliding movement within the housing and at the top has sealing means 23 for fluidtight engagement. The member 15 is extended within the housing 11 by pressure due to mud pumped from a pit 45 to the interior of the housing, the mud seeping through holes 30 in the drill bit and returning to the pit by way of the borehole 31. Above the borehole is a drill rig 20 comprising a crown block 32, a travelling block 33, a hook and swivel unit 34, fall lines 35 anchored at 36 and a weight indicator 37. The drill string is rotated by means of a rotary table 40 and its prime mover 41. A gauge 39 is provided for use when varying the pressure of the pump. A flow restricting device 46 may be provided on the pump discharge line for use with a gauge 47 for measuring the rate of flow through the drill string 13. Openings 48 may be provided in the housing 11 to allow escape of liquid into the borehole when the sealing means 23 has passed the openings, and so give an indication that the inner member 15 has been extended to its limit. In a modification the drill bit is secured to a housing which surrounds the inner member secured to the drill string. The apparatus may be used where the drilling takes place in a substantially horizontal direction.
