731,667. Treating gases with liquids. NORTH THAMES GAS BOARD. March 10, 1953 [Jan. 17, 1952], No. 1397/52. Class 55 (2). In a bubble cap column for distillation, gas scrubbing, &c. two or more liquid flow paths are provided over the bubble cap plate or plates, and are controlled so that the quantity flowing along each path is proportional to the total area of slots in the bubble caps bounding the path. Each plate 2 of a column 1 has two arcuate risers 9, 10, covered by a slotted cap 11, 12, and central chambers 5, 6, formed by a wall 4 and a radial partition 3, liquid supplied to chamber 5 from a downcomer 8 flows over wall 4 along both sides of the caps and over a weir 17 in the wall in the opposite side of partition 3 into a downcomer feeding a lower plate. The downcomers may be cranked so that their inlets are arranged above one another, or they are wider at the top as shown. To control the flow unequal notches 15, 16 in wall 4 proportion the inflowing liquid according to the number of slots in the two sides of the bubble caps which constitute the margins of two flow paths kept separate by a projection 14 bridging the gap between wall 4 and cap. 11.
