[Also in Group XIII] A refractory unit for gas fires comprises a boxlike metal casing, in contact with and supporting a fire brick and a series of radiant elements interchangeably mounted in front of the fire brick to form a combustion chamber for the products from a burner. Triangular section radiant elements 20 of refractory material with rearwardly projecting teeth 15, and square section end pieces 16, are held between a refractory back brick 7 and flanges 5 at the front edges of the side walls of the metallic box casing 1. The fire brick 7 is cut away to form a combustion space 8, tapering towards the top and a shallow combustion chamber is formed between the lower part of the fire brick and the bottom radiant 21 of rectangular cross-section. Non-aerated burner nozzles project through a slot 4 in the bottom wall of the casing, which is supported by brackets formed on the burner casting. One or more refractory units may be supported within the casing of a gas fire leaving convection passages for air between the casings of the refractory units and the outer casing of the fire, the air leaving and entering the passages through openings in the front surround of the fire.
